Daniel Hiteshew (1804-1853)

According to History of Frederick County, Maryland by Williams & McKinsey, Daniel Hiteshew was the son of George Hiteshew and was born in Frederick County in 1804. I have found no records showing Daniel's mother's name or providing any other information about her.

While the available records don't provide direct proof that George Phillip Hiteshew (b. 1756) was Daniel's father, census records for Frederick County, MD for 1800 and 1810 include only a small number of people with surname Hiteshew. These are likely all children and grandchildren of Johann Nicolaus Hiteshew, who was in Frederick County by 1773.

There is a George Hiteshew in 1830 Federal Census records for ED 7 (next to ED 6 with Taneytown). This may be a census record for George born ~1788, included in the wiki family tree as a brother of Daniel.

Daniel most likely grew up on a farm owned by his father in the Taneytown area. At the time of Daniel's birth, his father was probably well-established and reasonably well off, but at age 48 would be moving past his prime. If Daniel's mother was George Phillip's first wife, census records suggest she would have been no younger than 38 at the time of Daniel's birth. Census records suggest that in 1820 Daniel (age 14) was living with his parents, and that his father (George Phillip) died sometime before 1830. If George Phillip left behind a widow, she and Daniel may have remained together for a time. Alternatively, Daniel may have been taken into a household of an older brother, uncle or cousin.

Daniel married Susan (or Susannah) Grinder in 1828. I have looked through all the 1830 Federal Census records for Frederick County, MD and found no household for Daniel. It seems likely, then, that Daniel and Susan were staying in the household of another family member in 1830.

Williams & McKinsey report that Daniel was a farmer in early manhood, but their biographical sketch does not mention any other occupation for Daniel. The 1840 census puts him in or near the town of Frederick and the 1850 census puts him in or near the town of Middleton.

Census records indicate that Daniel lived in the Taneytown area at least until 1820 (i.e. age 14). During that time, his family may have been affiliated with Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. For more information see external website Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Taneytown.

The 1850 census puts him in or near Middletown. So records for Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown, MD may be relevant:
