Johann Nicolaus Hiteshew (c.1728-?)

A number of online family trees show Johann Nicolas (JN) as born 1728 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania to parents Jacob Heidschuh and Anna Marie (surname unknown). 1) I do not know what information sources these trees are based on and have found no records to confirm. Later records are consistent with this, but the information should be considered tentative. If the birth year and place are correct, JN would have been born in the later part of 1728 after his immigrant parents arrival in August.

A record of a land warrant dated April 22, 1752 shows the transfer of Lot No 383 in Berks County, PA to John Nicholas Hiteshew. 2) (Note the Americanized spelling of the name). Unfortunately, the acreage is not shown.

The Schumacher Register includes entries for the baptism of older sons Jürg/George Phillip and Johann Jacob at Alsace church, which is located in Berks County, PA. 3) Another record shows Nicolas Heitschuh and Anna Sibylla as the parents of Johannes Heitschuh, christened on 10.Jun,1773 at Evangelical Lutheran of Middletown, Frederick, Maryland. 4)

The Alsace Church, where JN's older children were baptized, was a Lutheran church near what is now Reading, PA. For more information see external website History of Alsace Lutheran Church, Alsace, Pennsylvania

JN's The church referred to in the baptism record for younger son Johannes appears to be the predecessor of the present day Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown, MD. For more information see:

(Possibly incomplete) Johann Nicolaus Hiteshew + Anna Sybilla (birth surname unknown)

George Phillip Hiteshew + Unknown

—(Tentative and probably incomplete)—

  • Elizabeth? (b. ~1787)
  • George? (b. ~1788)
  • Abraham? (b. ~1789)
  • Jacob (b. ~1798)
  • Daniel (b. 1804)

J. Jacob Hiteshew + (Margaret Sueberlingen?)

—(Tentative and probably incomplete)—

  • ?Nicholas (b. ~1794)
  • ?Solomon (b. ~1798)
  • ?Phillip (b. ~1800)
  • ?David (b. ~1803)

JN had a brother who had a son Jacob (b. 14.Feb.1760). A number of family trees and records compiled from this show Margaret Sueberlingen as the wife of Jacob (b. 1760) and attribute children Nicholas, Solomon, Phillip and David to this union. However, a book titled Names in Stone, which lists cemetery inscriptions from Frederick County, MD, includes a record for a Jacob Hiteshew b. 14 Feb. 1760 d. 10.May.1826. So it seems that Jacob (b. 1760) cannot be the Jacob Highshoe (age 80-89) listed directly under a Solomon Highshoe (age 40-49) in an 1840 census record for Harrison, Perry, OH. Instead, it seems likely that the census record refers to J. Jacob (b. 1757, son of JN), as does an 1830 census record for the same township that lists Jacob Hitshue (age 70-79), along with Soloman Hitshue (age 30-39), David Hitshue (age 30-39), and Nicholas Hitshue (age 30-39).
